When Google launched its Drive File Stream last year, they announced that the Drive desktop sync client for Mac and PC—a feature officially known as “Google Drive for Mac/PC”—would shut down completely on 12 March 2018. In response to your feedback, they are delaying that shutdown date to 12 May 2018.
Please recall that when Wingate IT started migrating files from the N:\ drive to Google Drive, we recommend that users either install or upgrade to Google Backup and Sync.
Google will start showing pop-up notifications on those Wingate G Suite accounts that are still using Drive for Mac/PC. These notifications will include instructions on how to install something called Drive File Stream. Wingate IT still recommends Google Backup and Sync at this time unless it is imperative that one access a team drive from ones computer desktop. The reason for this precaution is that Drive File Stream inserts a drive letter on PC’s which have the potential for ransomware vulnerabilities.
